Imagery

Imagery - When your mind creates a picture in your head. For example, when you have an idea, are reading a book, a poem, picturing a place, or looking at a picture and you can see it in your mind.
Example from the text:
“The Radley place jutted into a sharp curve beyond our house. Walking south, one faced its porch; the sidewalk turned and ran beside the lot. The house was low, was once with a deep front porch and green shutters, but have long ago darkened to the color of the curves of the veranda: oak trees kept the sun away. Remain of picket drunkenly guarded the front yard a sweet yard that was never swept-
where Johnson grass and rabbit tobacco grew in abundance” (8).
The author is describing the appearance of the Radley place in Maycomb. She described it in a way that we can picture the house as if it was plain as day, right in front of us.
Example from the text:
Scout says, “Just as the birds know where to go when it rains, I knew when there was trouble in our street” (68-69).
Instead of explaining how there was trouble in the street the author shows how Scout knew there was
trouble, in the same way you can imagine a flock of birds flying under cover when it begins to rain.
