Teacher: "Ok class! Go home and define the literary term 'setting' because I said so! Find examples in To Kill a Mockingbird."
Later that day
Child: " Mother, what is the literary term 'setting' mean?"
Mother: "Well, setting is the physical background in which a story takes place. It also refers to the time, atmosphere, and enviroment of the story. Such as, Mrs. Pickle squash lived in a trailer park exactly 20 meters from the ocean. Everyday she could feel the cool salty breeze brush up against her skin."
Child: "......"
Child: "Mother, what are some examples of the setting in To Kill a Mockingbird?"
Mother: (searches for a example)
Mother: (still flipping through pages)
Mother: "What about page 5? 'Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it.'"
Child: "doesn't the book take place in Alabama?" (Child's own copy of To Kill a Mockingbird)
Mother: "Yes! You're getting it!"
Child: "Yay!"
Mother: "Son, don't you think you're a bit young to be reading this book?"
